Mr Youssef A. Nasr joined the HSBC Group in April 1975 and retired in March 2010. During his career in the HSBC Group, he has worked in the New York, Paris, London, Toronto, Vancouver, San Paulo and Dubai offices.

 

His most recent roles were as President and CEO of HSBC Canada from 1997 to 1999. After that, he served as the President and CEO of HSBC USA and North America. In 2003, he was made the President of HSBC Brazil and the Group General Manager of South America. This was a position he held till 2006. In 2007, he became the Chairman and CEO of HSBC Middle East and North Africa (MENA).

 

Besides serving in HSBC, Mr Youssef has chaired and served on boards of numerous cultural, medical, professional and educational associations. He currently serves on the boards of various companies in North America in the areas private equity, infrastructure, bio-technology, electricity generation and real estate. Mr Youssef teaches an Executive MBA Program and does some consulting work.

En Rustam Mohd. Idris is the Deputy Director of the Islamic Banking and Takaful Department, Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM, Central Bank of Malaysia). He joined BNM in 1986. En Rustam is part of the team responsible for the development of Islamic banking in BNM since the early 1990s until today. Among his key involvement was the introduction of the dual banking system in Malaysia, the Financial Sector Master Plan and the Malaysian Islamic Financial Centre initiatives. En Rustam was also involved in the IFSB Working Group on Shariah Governance System and the IFSB Working Group on Revised Standard on Capital Adequacy and Sukuk Securitisation. En Rustam was previously responsible for the formulation of prudential policies for the Islamic banking and takaful industry. He has recently moved to head the strategic communication, external relations and talent development unit in the Islamic banking and takaful department.

Mr Nabil N. El-Hage is Chairman of Academy of Executive Education and a faculty member for ICLIF, where he teaches in the Financial Institutions Directors' Education Program (FIDE). Mr. Nabil recently served as Professor of Management Practice at Harvard Business School, where he also held various other positions, including Senior Associate Dean for External Relations. At Harvard, he taught courses in corporate finance, private equity, and corporate governance, for eight years.

 

Mr Nabil is a practitioner as well as an academic, having served as Chairman and CEO of Jeepers! Inc, a private equity-financed national chain of indoor theme parks, for nearly 10 years. He also has operating experience in private equity and venture capital with TA Associates and Advent International, and as CFO of Back Bay Restaurant Group, a listed restaurant holding company.

 

Mr Nabil has taught and consulted extensively for central banks, financial institutions, multinational corporations, sovereign wealth funds, and family businesses. Representative clients include the Central Bank of Bahrain, Khazanah Nasional Berhad, The Carlyle Group, and Saudi Arabia Economic and Development Holding Co.

 

Mr Nabil currently serves on four boards of directors, including a multinational Property and Casualty insurance company and a US$ 25 billion MassMutual Life Insurance Company-affiliated mutual fund complex.

Mr Chibli W. Mallat is a highly regarded academic and legal scholar. He holds three independently tenured professorships, one each in Europe, the United States and the Middle East. In the past, he has held visiting professorship positions at Harvard Law School, Yale Law School and Princeton Law School. He has authored and edited half a dozen books on Islamic Law and Islamic Finance. He has been called upon as an expert in leading edge Islamic Finance cases throughout the Islamic world.

Datuk Dr Mohd Daud Bakar is the Founder and Group Chairman of Amanie Advisors, a global boutique Shariah advisory firm with offices located worldwide. He currently sits as a Chairman of the Shariah Advisory Council at Bank Negara Malaysia, Securities Commission Malaysia, Labuan Financial Services Authority and the International Islamic Liquidity Management Corporation (IILM). He is also a Shariah board member of various financial institutions, including the National Bank of Oman (Oman), Noor Islamic Bank (Dubai), Amundi Asset Management (France), Morgan Stanley (Dubai), Bank of London and Middle East (London), BNP Paribas (Bahrain), Bank Al Khair (Bahrain), Islamic Bank of Asia (Singapore), Dow Jones Islamic Market Index (New York), Financial Guidance (USA), amongst many others.

 

Prior to this, he was the Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the International Islamic University Malaysia. He received his first degree in Shariah from University of Kuwait in 1988 and obtained his PhD from University of St. Andrews, United Kingdom in 1993. In 2002, he completed his external Bachelor of Jurisprudence at University of Malaya. He has published a number of articles in various academic journals and has made many presentations in various conferences both locally and overseas.

 

On the recognition side, Datuk Dr Mohd Daud has been honoured with "The Asset Triple A Industry Leadership Award" at The Asset Triple A Islamic Finance Award 2014 by The Asset magazine. He has also been named the "Most Outstanding Individual" awarded by His Majesty, the King of Malaysia, in conjunction with Prophet Muhammad's birthday celebrations in 2014.

 
 
 

 

 

Datuk Dr Mohd Daud Bakar
 

Dato' Mohammad Faiz Azmi is the Executive Chairman of PwC Malaysia and was the leader of PricewaterhouseCoopers Global Islamic Finance Team practice from 2007 to September 2012. He was also previously the Financial Services Leader for Malaysia.

 

Dato' Faiz has over 30 years of experience in the audit and business advisory services of financial institutions both in the UK and Malaysia. He has also been involved in the audits of clients in the banking, healthcare, power and construction sectors.

 

A subject matter expert on banking and Islamic finance topics, Dato' Faiz is often invited to speak at seminars and forums, both locally and abroad.

 

Dato' Faiz serves on the boards of several professional bodies. Among others, he is the Chairman of the Malaysia Accounting Standards Board, a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and Council Member of the Malaysian Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Dato' Faiz is a Council Member of the Malaysian Institute of Accountants and chairs the Capital Market Advisory Committee of the MIA. In addition, he is a member of The Association of Chartered Islamic Finance Professionals Malaysia and chairs the Asian-Oceanian Standard-Setters Group on Islamic Finance. He is also a member of the International Accounting Standards Board, Committee on Islamic Product/Finance.

 

Dato' Faiz was educated in Malaysia and the UK, and read law at the University of Durham before being called to the English Bar. He is also a Liveryman of London, a member of the Worshipful Company of Accountants England and Wales.

Prof. Dr. Mohamad Akram is currently the Executive Director of International Shari’ah Research Academy for Islamic Finance (ISRA) and Professor at International Centre for Education in Islamic Finance (INCEIF). Prior to joining ISRA he was an Assistant Professor at the Kulliyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences, International Islamic University, Malaysia (IIUM). In the period 2002-2004, he was a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Sharjah, Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. At present, he is the Deputy Chairman of Bank Negara Malaysia Shari’ah Advisory Council, Member of Accounting and Auditing Organisation of Islamic Financial Institution (AAOIFI) Shari'ah Board, Member of Law Harmonisation Committee Bank Negara Malaysia, Member of Shari’ah Board of Employees Provident Fund Malaysia (EPF), Member of Maldives Monetary Authority Shari’ah Board, Member of Yassar Limited (UK) Shari’ah Advisory Board, Member Financial Regulation Advisory Council of Experts (FRACE), Central Bank of Nigeria, Shari’ah Advisor to ZI Syariah Advisory Malaysia, Member of Shari’ah Advisory Council International Islamic Financial Market (IIFM), Bahrain, Member of Thomson Reuters Islamic Benchmark (IIBR) Shariah Committee; Member of Shari’ah Advisor of Dar Al Takaful (Dubai), Member of Watania Takaful Shariah Committee (Abu Dhabi), Member of the Shariah Supervisory Council of Labuan Financial Services Authority, Member Board of Trustee of Islamic Research Training Institute under Islamic Development Bank, Jeddah and other Boards locally and internationally.

 

Prof. Akram holds a B.A. Honours degree in Islamic Jurisprudence and Legislation from the University of Jordan, Amman, Jordan and a Ph.D. in Principles of Islamic Jurisprudence (Usul al-Fiqh) from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom. He has presented many papers related to Islamic Banking and Finance and other Fiqh topics at national and International level and has conducted many training sessions particullarly on Islamic Banking and Finance for different sectors since 1999. He is a registered Shariah Advisor for Islamic Securities with the Securities Commission of Malaysia and has acted as Shariah advisor in the issuance of several sukuks. In addition he is also prolific author of academic works specifically in the areas of Islamic Banking and Finance. He is the receipient of Zaki Badawi Award for Excellence in Shariah Advisory and Research.
